What Time Is Best for Sunset in Santorini?
Sunset moves nearly two hours across the season, from 20:39 in June to 18:44 in October. Here is the month-by-month clock, and when to arrive or cast off.

People ask for the best time as though the island keeps one. It does not. The sun that drops at 20:39 in mid-June is gone by 18:44 in mid-October, and every plan built around it slides with it: the table, the taxi, the boat. Get the clock right and the evening organises itself.
What time is best for sunset in Santorini?
Between 18:44 and 20:39, depending on the month. Mid-month at Thira the sun sets at 19:53 in April, 20:19 in May, 20:39 in June, 20:38 in July, 20:11 in August, 19:28 in September and 18:44 in October. Boats cast off two and a half to three hours earlier; viewpoints want you 45 to 90 minutes early.
That last sentence is where itineraries go wrong. The sunset minute is fixed by astronomy, but the two things you book, a departure and a seat, run on different clocks.

Viewpoint arrivals assume 90 minutes in June, July and August, and 45 to 60 minutes in the shoulder months. Departure windows come from the 2.5 to 3 hour lead the caldera fleet works to.
Why do the boats leave so early?
Because the sunset is the last item on a five-hour list. A caldera catamaran casts off two and a half to three hours before the sun goes down, runs the cliff wall, stops to swim, anchors at the hot springs, serves dinner, then positions west with time to spare. Roughly half the trip happens in full daylight.
In mid-August that means a hotel collection some time after four for a sun that sets at 20:11. In October the same boat leaves before four. Nothing about the itinerary changed, only the light, and the fleet compared boat by boat sets out which hulls run the full five hours.
There is a sailing reason for the early start as well as a scheduling one. The meltemi blows through from June to September, hardest in July and August, and it usually builds through the middle of the day before easing toward evening. When should you arrive at a viewpoint instead?
Ninety minutes before sunset from June to August, when roughly 800 people fill the Oia castle by 18:30. Forty-five to sixty minutes is enough in April, May, September and October. Fira and Imerovigli need less lead time than Oia, because the crowd spreads along a longer rim instead of funnelling onto one wall.
Work backwards from the table. A June evening in Oia means being in position by 19:09 for a 20:39 sunset, a long stand in the heat with no chair and no dinner. October is gentler: 17:44 in position, a sun down by 18:44, a village that is not full. Golden hour, the sunset minute, or blue hour?
The sunset minute is the shortest and least interesting part. Colour arrives in the hour before, peaks in the ten or fifteen minutes after the disk vanishes, and the rim lights come on through the half hour of blue that follows. Leaving at the sunset minute means missing the best light of the evening.

June and July hand you a 20:39 or 20:38 sunset, and that late hour has a cost: a boat that collects you at five and returns close to midnight, in the two months when the wind is strongest. August is easier at 20:11. April is the quiet surprise, with a 19:53 sunset, thin crowds and cool water.
